The Memory Of Past Sins

Do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. -Genesis 45:5

This quote comes from the story of Joseph at the point that he reveals himself to his brothers that sold him into slavery in Egypt. What an act of forgiveness! Joseph was sold into slavery and harbored no ill-will toward his brothers. Today we harbor grudges for years or decades for wrongs done to us that, in comparison to being sold a slave, are quite trivial. Sometimes the person we have not forgiven is ourselves. Have you forgiven yourself the way God has forgiven you?

If you feel guilty about something then you may have forgotten to forgive yourself. Jesus, the Messiah, the Deliverer of salvation to the world, was crucified and died so that the sin of every believer is forgotten forever. That's what Peter says in Acts 3:19, "Now turn from your sins and turn to God, so you can be cleansed of your sins." The Greek word translated here as cleansed in the NLT means to blot or to smear out or to obliterate. When you accept Christ as your savior that's what happens to all of your sin. It is obliterated. If you've already accepted Christ then there is no need to feel guilty about past sins.

Joseph new that everything that happened to him was the will of God so he blamed no man for his misfortune. He tells his brothers that it was God who sent him to Egypt not them. Joseph's is the last story in the book of Genesis. It's an exciting and uplifting story about forgiveness and redemption and spans from chapter 37 to chapter 50. Praise God we are redeemed!

Blessed be the name of Jesus!
I'm so glad He took me in;
He's forgiven my transgressions,
He has cleansed my heart from sin. -—Harris

Guilt is a burden God never intended His children to bear.
