A news article this morning reported Iraqi insurgents now have IED's that blast through the Army's Mine Resistant Ambush Protective vehicle, known as an MRAP. (http://www.military.com/news/article/new-concerns-after-2-die-in-mrap.html?col=1186032310810&ESRC=topstories.RSS).
This vehicle has only been fielded for a year, I think, and already they are able to penetrate it. Does Iran have a hand in this? Hmm. It seems likely to me, but what do I know.
If traveling the road ways is so dangerous I wonder why the army doesn't travel OFF-road. One of the basic principles of combat tells us that the army with the greatest advantage is the army who chooses the time and place of battle. It is strange that we are allowing the insurgents to choose the time and place of battle by traveling the roadways. Instead of spending $5.4 billion dollars on armoured vehicles that apparently don't work as intended should we not spend the same money to develop vehicles that have no need of traveling the road ways at all? Would this not give us the advantage of choosing the time and place of battle or at least lessening the ability of our foe to do so?
But, then, what do I know. I'm not an officer and I've never been to war college.
