What was before God?

"Most of the important things that a human being ought to know cannot be comprehended in youth." Robert Huchins, the President of The University of Chicago.

I have a young friend who is wavering in in her faith because she is nagged by a single question, what was before God and how did God pop into existence. This is a very good question. It is easy to answer, but difficult for many to comprehend.

The answer to the question is this, God has no beginning and He has no end. He did not pop into existence because he has existed for eternity, for an infinite amount of time. There never was a time without God because He has always existed for an infinite amount of time. He was before all things.

What was before time? What was before space? What is the last number in Pi? These are the same types of question. Even if no human exists to count it time always has passed and always will pass. A basic law of physics teaches that something cannot be made by nothing therefore there could not have been a time without space because it could not have just "popped" into existence (unless it was created by an all powerful divine being). And of course Pi just keeps on going and going and going like the Energizer Bunny.

These examples are important because we accept time without question as it is even though we cannot see nor hear nor feal nor taste time, yet it so powerfully influences our lives. We read about all the wonderful things in space and we believe without question all that we are taught about it even though we cannot see it with our own eyes or experience it with our own body. And we believe without question that there is no end to Pi because we cannot find it. The reason these are important is that they show a standard that should be applied to the understanding of God.

Like time we cannot physically see, hear, feal, nor taste God (only spiritually can these be experienced), but he powerfully influences our lives. In the Bible we can read about the vast, eternal nature of God and the creation of all things, but only through application can we experience Him. And search as you may, you cannot find an end to God (nor can you find a beginning), but that doesnt mean there is no God.

One can understand the nature of God only in Heaven. In Psalm 139:6 & 17-18 David writes:

6. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is high, I cannot attain it.
17. God, how difficult Your thoughts are for me to comprehend;
how vast there sum is!
18. If I counted them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand;
when I wake up, I am still with You.

If science seems to prove to you that God does not exist I encourage you to keep looking into science and asking yourself, what was before that and what was before that. I think you will see, like many scientists have, that nothing could possibly exist in the Universe without the presence of an infinite, all powerful, God. Otherwise, the universe would violate all the known laws of physical science.
