Are women subservient to men? Heck no!

I have a colleague who is staunchly atheist. Some of the the things he says are pretty funny. I've learned (mostly now) to not get involved in his anti-Christian tirades. The thing is, his facts are often completely wrong.

For example. This weekend he said the Bible said women were to be subservient to men. I quietly advised him it does not say that, rather it says that wives should be submissive to husbands as husbands should be submissive to God. Now, understand that there is a big difference between being subservient and being submissive.

(1 Cor 11:3 & 11:8-9 & 11:11-12)
3 But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of the woman, and God is the head of Christ . . . 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman came from man; 9 and man was not created for woman, but woman for man . . . 11 However, in the Lord, woman is not independent of man, and man is not independent of woman. 12 For just as woman came from man, so man comes through woman, and all things come from God.

As you can see, this passage clearly shows that husband and wife are equal partners, but that the family should be hierarchical. Lets look at it this way. Imagine if, at work, you had two bosses with equal authority and you could get in trouble by disobeying either one of them. What if the two were at odds with each other and told you to do two different things? Life would be pretty confusing, eh? That's what happens when a family has no structure. Children get confused and don't know what to do if parents are at odds with each other. If parents are at odds with each other then one must submit to the other and come to a consensus. This is the only way harmony can be obtained and maintained.
